NASDE rules apply for Classic & Showcase Categories below:
NASDE General Rules:
- Contestants must be 18 years or older by the end of the event to participate.
- Competitors will be one Male Leader and one Female Follower.
- The maximum number of entries in each division is at the Event’s discretion. There is no minimum number of entries. If fewer than ten couples enter a division, NASDE points will still be awarded.
- Guidelines for expected swing content are: at 80% in Classic; 60% in Showcase. It is at the judges’ discretion to determine that the swing content requirement has been met.
- An individual is not permitted to dance twice within the same division.
Statement of Swing: NASDE Statement of Swing to be used to identify the presence of swing in the NASDE competition divisions. Swing is an American Rhythm Dance based on a foundation of 6-beat and 8-beat patterns that incorporate a wide variety of rhythms built on 2-beat single, delayed, double, triple, and blank rhythm units. The 6-beat patterns include, but are not limited to, passes, underarm turns, push-breaks, open-to-closed, and closed-to-open position patterns. The 8-beat patterns include, but are not limited to, whips, swing-outs, Lindy circles, and Shag pivots. Although they are not part of the foundation of the dance as stated above, 2- beat and 4-beat extension rhythm breaks may be incorporated to extend a pattern, to phrase the music, and/or to accent breaks.
For Classic & Showcase Swing Contests, please refer to current rules on N.A.S.D.E. website: N.A.S.D.E. Rules
Champions Strictly Swing:
Swing dancing that encourages lead and follow partner dancing at its best. Although swing includes amalgamations and patterns that are familiar to many dancers, the essence of lead and follow must be maintained in and out of these patterns. Strictly Swing division is not meant for long and extended pre-choreographed phrases. Choreography "on the fly" is the objective. Drops, leans, circular movements and other partner weight support moves are allowed as long as both partners keep at least one foot on the floor.
- Length of performance is at the promoter's discretion.
- Costumes are not allowed. However, matching or complementary outfits suitable for social dancing are acceptable
- This division will be danced in heats and/or spotlight at the promoter's discretion.
- Couples must maintain physical contact except for spins, turns, short break-a-ways, and recoveries.
- Pre-choreographed routines are not allowed.
- Dancers must maintain their own physical contact with the floor during partner weight support moves.
- At most five partner weight support moves are permitted.
Champions Strictly will include a preliminary round, and a final. Please preregister.
Advanced/All Star Strictly Swing:
Dancers will choose a partner: one male and one female. The DJs will pick the music. No lifts drops, aerials or choreographed routines allowed. The division is open to dancers who are eligible for Advanced or All Star Jack & Jill. A Novice or Intermediate dancer may "dance up" in the Advanced/All Star division if he/she is partnered with an Advanced/All Star dancer. Any dancer from this division may choose to "dance up" into the Champions Strictly Swing division.
Novice/Intermediate Strictly Swing:
Dancers will choose a partner: one male and one female. The DJs will pick the music. No lifts drops, aerials or choreographed routines allowed. The division is open to dancers who are not eligible for Advanced or higher Jack & Jill. Advanced/All Star dancers may not "dance down" in this division.
Rising Star Routine:
This division is offered for "new to competition" couples that do not choose to dance with the experienced competitive couples. Couples dance a choreographed routine to their own choice of music (3 minutes maximum length). Lifts and drops are allowed. This division will host all forms of swing. Dancers that have placed 5th or higher at a N.A.S.D.E. Classic or Showcase event are not eligible. Dancers that have won a Rising Star Division three times or more are not eligible.
Swing Team:
Four or more couples of any gender combination will dance a choreographed swing routine. The music is chosen by the team. Music will be a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum of 5 minutes. Emphasis is on synchronized dancing and formations are encouraged. Costumes are also encouraged.
Jack & Jill Competitions:
Dancers will enter this contest as an individual leader or follower. Leaders must be male and followers female. Partners are then randomly paired, by pick from a hat, roll of a dice, or rotation, and will dance to music selected by the DJ. During the preliminary rounds, partners will rotate more than once. The number of rounds (and rotations) will be determined by the contest staff. Leaders and followers will be selected to advance to finals individually, but will be judged on how well they dance with their partner. Finalists will be randomly paired and will be placed as a couple, not individually. Couples will not rotate or change partners during finals. Rules based on World Swing Dance Council guidelines, but written as appropriate for this event.
Note: This event encourages dancers to remain in their respective divisions until they have a first place win, or 30 points, in that division, before moving up.
- Newcomer WCS Jack & Jill:
Open to WCS dancers who have never competed or have fewer than 5 Newcomer/Novice points in the WSDC registry.

Newcomer & Novice Jack & Jill Feedback Program:
Summer Hummer has been offering feedback to Newcomer & Novice competitors who do not make finals for the past 7 years. Last year, we made a huge improvement to our program. We use the same method again this year. For any dancer that does not make finals in Newcomer or Novice division Jack & Jill, there will be a special feedback class at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. The workshop room will be full of judges and teachers who will watch the dancers dance with a partner. The judges will then give each individual one item to help them improve their chances of making finals.
There will also be a special seminar with Robert Royston for Newcomer & NoviceJack & Jill competitors on Saturday morning to prepare them for what may be their first contest. This workshop is mandatory for all Newcomer & Novice Jack & Jill competitors.
- Intermediate WCS Jack & Jill:
Open to WCS dancers who have earned 20 or more Novice points and fewer than 25 Intermediate points in the WSDC registry.
- Advanced WCS Jack & Jill:
Open to dancers who have 25 or more Intermediate points in the WSDC registry.
- All Star WCS Jack & Jill:
Open to dancers who have 40 or more Advanced points in the WSDC registry.
- Champions Jack & Jill:
Champions Jack & Jill will include a preliminary round, and a final. Please preregister.
Pro/Am Routine:
Students dance a choreographed routine with their teacher, to music of their own choosing. The music may be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes. Lifts and drops are allowed.
Please Note: Pro/Am awards will be bronze, silver, and gold level awards, instead of placements.
